We now have a set of real genealogy pages for our branch of the Dawes family,
thanks to Dan Kangley! It traces all known (and deceased) Descendants of Adrian Dawes of
Nottinghamshire. Real genealogists will enjoy this!
Our branch's earliest Dawes is Adrian of Nottinghamshire, whose son Francis
(m. Margaret Griffith) came from England in 1702. Francis begot Adrian (1707-1787, m. Susannah
Wilkinson) who begot Adrian Jr. (m. Hannah Coate, d. 1830) who begot John W. Dawes, the head of
our clan. No one can tell if we are related to the families of William Dawes who rode with Paul Revere, Lt. William Dawes -- explorer,
astronomer, and Australian First Fleeter, or the Dawes family of Ambrose Putney, the extinct
baronetcy, original owners of the Dawes
achievement, crest, and arms. This family also included
Archbishops... but we're distant cousins at best.
Here's my collection of Dawes trivia and stories:

Lt. William Dawes
(1762-1836) of the Royal Marines, astronomer and father of William Rutter Dawes, explorer and adventurer, Australian
First Fleeter, has his own page on our site.
British Astronomer
William Rutter Dawes (1799-1868) is the son of Lt.
Dawes, First Fleeter. There's a cute Dawes Crater on Mars named after
him -- do you see a happy face giving a salute here? There is a Dawes Limit used by
astronomers, and a Dawes Crater on the moon: Ron Dawes redwad@XXXpacific.telebyte.com (remove the XXX) of Seattle contributed these items. He is an amateur astronomer; he
found another Ron Dawes in San Antonio, who also programs computers and is an amateur
astronomer. Both of these Ron's and your webmaster have ground telescope mirrors!
Dawes Black Horse Ale was made in Canada 50 years ago.
High quality Dawes bicycles are made in England and known around the
world.
A great-uncle of mine, George F. Dawes Sr. of La Crosse, Wisconsin, invented and patented the first commercially practical process for the manufacture of soap flakes in 1921. He sold it in 1929 to Procter and Gamble Co. for $500. His son George Jr. reported that about a week later, someone offered him $1,500 plus royalties.
I met George in 1945, when I was 12. He
seemed like a pretty contented man, not at all bitter or grouchy. Here's a copy of an article published shortly after his death in 1973 in the La Crosse Tribune about his life and the invention.
The Charles
G. Dawes home in Evanston, Illinois, is a national historical
landmark. It's open for tours year round.
There is a Dawes Road in Toronto.
There's a village in southern Alabama named Dawes.
OTHER THINGS
The Dawes Act, written by
Senator Henry Dawes in 1887, was " the first step in the allotting (stealing) of tribal
lands from the Cherokee" according to a Native American contributor to these pages, Arlo Stray Calf Dawes. You'll find many references to the 'Dawes Rolls'
on the Net today -- they are used as a tool for tracing Indian ancestry.
The melody of the
perennially popular song "It's All in the Game" was written by musician and composer
Charles G. Dawes, who composed the original "Melodie in A". He was also winner of the
Nobel Peace Prize. To hear the song and learn more about him, press this link.
