Offering

  • An authority in the application of computers to color matching and manufacture; Internet Web Page design and programming since 1994.
  • Creator and Editor of the Internet COLORING Digest, Webmaster of the COLORING Info Pages. Founded the Usenet newsgroup sci.engr.color.
  • 26 years experience coloring plastics, as a technologist and manager for major resin manufacturers, coloring ABS, Polyamides, Polyesters, and others.

Experience

March '94 to present:
ColorPro Communications -- http://colorpro.com/services/

  • Professional Web page services for consultants, organizations, and businesses. See our customer list.
  • Consultant to the coloring industry. Pigmentation and processing of plastics, color matching and instrumentation.
  • While specialties such as optics, lighting, and vision are already well served on the Net, the industry of coloring was not well represented in 1995.
  • I started the COLORING Mailing List for people who claim coloring as a special interest, publishing information and commentary in the COLORING Digest. This mailing list had over 240 members worldwide after six months. It is currently inactive; the Web pages and the Newsgroup sci.engr.color has taken its place.
  • I initiated the Internet COLORING InfoWeb Pages, now operating on the Word Wide Web at colorpro.com/info. Offers a list and links to coloring resources, links to coloring organizations, reference books and articles, a database of spectra, and a list of color instruments. The pages currently enjoy 800 to 1,100 accesses per month.
  • I founded the Usenet newsgroup sci.engr.color. I wrote the charter, led the discussion, and earned approval by a vote of 366:21. The group enjoys active discussions by beginner and advanced color technologists.

May '81 to March '94 — AlliedSignal, Inc., Hopewell, Virginia,
Senior Color Engineer. Supervisor, Walter Heumann 804-530-6059.
  • Created, installed, supervised systems for plastics product development, production, and control, internally, and at outside compounders. Designed color laboratory, selecting instruments and equipment. Developed lab procedures, purchased and wrote software for color matching, process control, and quality control. Successfully engineered expansion of nylon and polyester color business from 1.5 to 10 million pounds annually.
  • Performed extensive research on the effects of colorants on mechanical properties, light fastness, and color stability of end products.
  • With special knowledge of, and an aptitude for computers and programming, pioneered applications in plastics development and manufacture, including Materials Resource Planning.

March '79 to April '81 — Employment Recruiter, Dunhill of Baton Rouge.
I was also an Actor in dinner theater.

September '66 to February '79 — Uniroyal, Baton Rouge, closed in 1980.
Color Group Leader. Supervisor, Eli Schwartz, Naugatuck, Connecticut, 203-573-3489.
  • Managed R&D Color Laboratory, two colorists and six technicians. Supported development, production, and marketing of 30 million pounds per year of ABS and acrylic plastics. Provided thousands of cost optimized formulas with the right properties for the appliance and automotive industries. Set color tolerances, developed and monitored quality control procedures.
  • Initially used the COMIC analog computer to select colorants. Evaluated textile color matching programs on an IBM 1130, and convinced management that we could write better software in-house. Working with Howard Witt, applied mathematician, wrote a color matching program for plastics. Authored and installed programs for production color control. Colorant cost savings were more than 2 million dollars in 8 years. Installed the programs in three other company locations.
  • Specified colorants costing over 1 million dollars per year. Productive interface with suppliers resulted in improved colorants and finished products.
  • Provided color technical services. Traveled with salesmen, giving educational seminars to customers' management and technical staffs.
  • Served as Uniroyal's corporate color consultant; worked with product development within the division, and with divisions coloring PVC molding and extrusion products, and coated fabrics. Worked with scientists at Central Research, recommending colorants and processes for new resins.

January '57 to August '66 — Analytical Chemist. I've analyzed practically everything except concrete.
  • Allied Chemical, Baton Rouge. Fluorine chemicals development lab.
Managed GC, IR, metallurgical, and wet chemical analytical laboratories, three years.
  • American Cyanamid, New Orleans. Homopolymers and intermediates.
GC and Mass Spec, one year.
  • Ciba-Geigy, McIntosh, AL. Insecticides and herbicides development labs.
IR and wet chemical testing, two years.
  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration, New Orleans and Detroit.
Regulatory testing on foods, feeds, drugs, and cosmetics, three years.
  • Oschner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans.
Clinical chemist full time while in school, one year.

Avocations

Tour Guide. Specializing in walking tours of New Orleans French Quarter, Garden District, and Cemeteries. My card.

Angelfish Breeding. I spent about 50 years learning this art and science. When I finally mastered it, I gave the information to the world on the Angelfish Breeding FAQ web site, www.angelfish.info. The site has enjoyed over a quarter-million visitors since 1996. Many thousands of breeders around the world got their start here. :-)

International Folk Dance. Once a week, I do the dances of 50-plus countries, one of the greatest joys of my life.
