BRAHAM DAWES of Putney, one of the wealthiest commoners in
England, was awarded a baronetcy by Charles II on June 1, 1663, for his support of the
royal family during their exile by Oliver Cromwell.
The title descended to Thomas, John, Robert, William
(Archbishop of
York -- thanks, Alan!), D’Arcy, and William. It became extinct with his death on May 28, 1741.
So no living Dawes has title to this achievement. Our branch could be
distant cousins, but apparently no branch can trace their lineage before 1600. If you
have information on any Dawes or Daws of that era, please let me know. Some details of
our branch and others are given on the Dawes Lore page. |
