It is dated 1827 and is signed "SWD". I assume that SWD is a young lady as I don't imagine that needlepoint was considered to be an appropriate pursuit for a young gentleman in the early nineteenth century; perhaps she was a grand-daughter or a "surprise" daughter? Interestingly, there is no letter "J" in any of the eight alphabets. This is true of the Latin alphabet; so perhaps SWD had a classic education. My great grandmother Bettie used to take me for rides in her "electric" when I visited she and her mother in Logansport, Indiana. I remember it as a frightening experience! She was obli- vious of the chaos she created among the horse-drawn carriages. An excit- experience for a six year old. She was called Ba-ba and I adored her.I was allowed to sit on her great bed and play with my soldiers while she had her breakfast. I was doing just that when she quietly succumbed. My Grandfather was an interesting character. Apprenticed to a master plasterer he ran away and joined the army where he became a cavalryman (a lancer !). He fought in the Boer War where most of his contemporaries died in a charge against emplaced Boer troops armed with Martini Henry rifles. He eventually joined the London Fire Brigade (I have his photograph complete with huge brass helmet) where he was known as "Soldier Dawes" because the vast majority of firemen were ex-navy. He won a medal for bravery after rescuing some people from a lift shaft in a burning building. I just thought you might be interested. I would be honored to post his story and picture, in a "huge brass helmet", would make it a special page in the Dawes Lore and Stories! Please do get someone clever to scan it for you. The scan should be large, at least 600 pixels in its smallest dimension to allow me to (1) crop it to a nice thumbnail and (2) post a large version suitable for printing!

I have been to see that old slate tombstone in the graveyard of the Old North Church several times myself. Very moving. Wish I had a good picture of it to post here, will do my best to get one next time I go to Boston. Or, perhaps there's an historical site with one up already? Seems the Dawes Who Rode group doesn't have much of a Web presence yet, though. I've offered my services to them many times, but they are all 'too busy' ..... I get at least a dozen requests a year from kids writing papers, asking for a picture of the William Who Rode, which is posted here but apparently not easy to find. The original for the above picture hangs at the Dawes Arboretum, but they won't send me a better copy... The William Dawes Kings' and Queens' names are very popular in Dawes families. We are British in origin, but I suspect it's because it's such a nuisance to have to spell BOTH your first and last name...

There is a small community NE of Ardmore where the Dawes Academy was located,it was a black school with a white teacher named Dawes,her husband used the school as a place to register for Roll Number. Her father was Barney Dawes of Lacrosse, Wisconsin. My mom & her twin sister Betty Jane Dawes were two of four Dawes children. They were split up when their mother left. The oldest child my uncle Frank joined the service, the oldest girl my aunt Mildred went & lived with Mildred Natwick, my mother & her twin Betty were Put in an orphanage in LaCrosse. Hello Cousin Sandra! Lacrosse figures big in my branch too: I visited my uncle George Dawes and his family there ~1940. George invented powdered soap, sold the patent to "Chipso" for $75. My grandfather William H. Dawes' shoe factory was there 190x. My older brother and sisters went to boarding school there during WWII (I was in 2-4th grades, an army brat in Guthrie KY, Nashville TN, and Cisco TX.) Did you ever actually meet Mildred Natwick? Quite a lady. I visited her and her sister Mary in their penthouse on Fifth Avenue, NYC, overlooking Central Park. She had just finished acting in "Dangerous Liaisons" -- she said she enjoyed the Company, the costumes, and Europe, but that the story was "quite naughty" ... also regaled us with stories about her early career, when she and Henry Fonda auditioned together. My parents are both from Portland, ME. There were many rumors in the family about our lineage and a connection to William Dawes. Many years ago while I was in High School I decided to track the rumors down. After exhaustive research in the Library of Congress I was able to definitely pin this down. I am the great grandson (six times removed) of Thomas Dawes (also a Patriot and revolutionary orator), the brother of William (who made the ride). What you may not know is that these men were related to Ben Franklin (through marriage, not blood). It has been nearly 20 years since I did this research and I cannot remember if Ben Franklin married one of William and Thomas' sisters or aunts but I remember that the family referred to him as "Uncle Ben." Great site!

I strongly prefer the Cornish version that Davies is derived from the name Dawes. The Welsh holders of this name are the descendants of Cornish miners that were stranded in South Wales when the low lands of the southwest of Wessex flooded, forming the Bristol Channel.
