Thomas Benjamin Barton lived in Wisconsin until about 1895. He had a store in Freeport, Illinois around 1903-1904 according to Thelma Leopard. By 1908, he was in Sartell, Minnesota. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad. He worked as a cook for the lumberjacks in Minnesota. Thelma says he built the cupola at the Wautab Papermill in Sartell. Thomas and Mary Ellen Barton moved to Minneapolis in 1912. He worked for Pence Auto for a time. About 1919 they moved to a farm in Lakeville, Minnesota, south of the Twin Cities living there a few years until moving to a farm four and a half miles south of Cadott, Wisconsin. They finally arrived in Waterloo, Iowa in 1926. Thomas Benjamin Barton worked as a carpenter and contractor, building houses in St. Cloud, Minnesota and Waterloo, Iowa. He later worked as a custodian at the Waterloo public schools for 19 years until he was made to retire at age 81.
